The beloved children’s book by Roald Dahl, spun like cotton candy into two major motion pictures, Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory is getting the hotel treat-ment. Get it? I couldn’t resist. And neither will die-hard fans of all things Wonka. The Chocolate Box Hotel in Bournemouth (yes, the same chocolate themed get-away in BBC’s Interior Design Masters) has plans to offer a stay in a Willy Wonka themed room, complete with lickable wallpaper, according to Nerdist.com. Along with a complimentary chocolate fountain and jar after jar of gumballs and goodies, guests who stay in the Wonka Room can also have a dip in the chocolate bath; not a bath tub MADE of chocolate, but a tub filled with (what looks like) hot chocolate. But if they don’t have a small replica of the Wonkatania, is it even worth the dip?
The pictures look great, really they do. But as a Wonka purist, I can’t help but feel this room is a little underwhelming. Sure, they got the color scheme right, and some classic candies are represented, but if we’re going Wonka, what I want (and I want it now!) is the terror. Wonka was equal parts whimsy and WTF. It was merriment and madness. Without that bit of unease, I just see an quasi edible room decorated by Lisa Frank. It doesn’t scream “world of pure imagination” to me. The very least they could promise is the housekeeping staff dressed as Oompa Loompas to scare the ever-loving stuffing out of guests. That having been said, the hotel is just five minutes from the beach and shopping in downtown Bournemouth, so really, this saccharine sanctuary is the perfect location for everything a tourist could want… provided they don’t give themselves a tummy ache before setting out.
