HOLLAND, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — Lake Michigan claimed another life on Saturday, September 4.
It happened around 11:15 a.m. when a 67-year-old man from Mason drowned while swimming with family at a private beach on the south side of Park Township near Holland.
The Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office said in a release that the victim drowned when he was pulled out by waves, causing him to struggle and go underwater. Good Samaritans were able to find the man by using paddle boats and pulled him to shore. Authorities say the Samaritans started CPR before paramedics arrived.
Despite life-saving efforts, the Mason resident died at the scene. The incident remains under investigation.
The National Weather Service said that swimming conditions were expected to worsen on Lake Michigan throughout the Labor Day Weekend with waves predicted to top off around 3 to 5 feet.
