PORTAGE, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — As companies across the country aim to recover from the COVID-19 pandemic, a regional FedEx facility in Portage is gearing up for the holidays. And they’re doing this by beefing up their workforce to meet the predicted demand.
Handling and transporting, millions of packages a day, the facility in Portage opened in July with double the space and twice the speed to meet what FedEx called ‘an explosive growth of e-commerce.’
“It’s automated, so we’re able to process about 12,000 packages an hour,” said Sean O’Donnell, senior manager for FedEx ground in Portage during an interview with WWMT News Channel 3. “Speed is important and this facility doubled our ability to process packages.”
With a current staff of 350 at their plant at 6701 Portage Road, FedEx is hoping to add about another 50 warehouse employees for what they say is shaping up to be a very busy holiday season.
Over the last month, the company has hired 50 people out of the 100 positions they were looking to fill, and hopes to have that done by the end of November.
