KENT COUNTY, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — A Kalamazoo man and woman are facing several charges after being arrested in Kent County Wednesday morning, March 8. But what makes this arrest unique is that they were caught with over 100 pieces of stolen mail.
It all began around 1 a.m. when Kent County Sheriff’s deputies were notified that a Jeep stolen out of Kalamazoo was seen in Byron Township. Once they located the vehicle, they tried to stop the driver near 84th Street and US-131, but the driver sped away leading deputies on a chase according to the Kent County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies then deployed spike strips at 100th Street and US-131 in an attempt to stop the vehicle, but the driver was still able to flee down the highway until the vehicle came to a complete stop near the Dorr exit.
The two suspects, aged 40 and 37 years old, were arrested on charges related to the stolen Jeep, fleeing and eluding, and possession of burglary tools, according to the sheriff’s office.
Inside the car, deputies found over 100 pieces of stolen mail that had been taken from Kalamazoo, Ottawa County, and Byron Township, to include multiple credit and debit cards, checks, and other assorted mail.
The suspects also face a possible federal investigation by the U.S. Postal Inspection Service.
