PORTAGE, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – One of the two developers proposing a controversial new housing development near Austin Lake has withdrawn his request for rezoning after unprecedented community opposition, at least for now.
The city of Portage received the letter from Grand Rapids developer Dale Kraker Tuesday afternoon, July 25 just hours before the City Council met, apparently after he had discussions with Mayor Patricia Randall, who applauded Kraker for the decision.
Mayor ProTempore Jim Pearson thanked Randall for her efforts.
The Austin Landings proposal called for hundreds of single family homes, condos and apartments to be built on a 126 acre parcel on the north shore of Austin Lake off Zylman Road. Homeowners feared the added congestion would harm the environment, cause traffic problems and hurt property values.
The public outpouring of opposition prompted Mayor Randall to declare a temporary moratorium on the development proposals and to form a community task force to gather information.
Citizens also expressed concerns about a 2nd project off Portage Road on Stanley Avenue, calling for 60 to 70 single family homes.
The Citizens task force will remain in place, according to Randall who said, “City Hall MUST reflect the families it represents. I am proud to have helped address this neighborhood’s concerns. I remain hopeful the people that live there will join with me in making this Task Force a success.”
