THREE RIVERS, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – The Three Rivers City Commission approved more than $275,000 for four companies to repair a force main break in the city’s wastewater treatment plant.
The approval came on Tuesday, August 1 after a half a million gallons of sewage spilled into the St. Joseph River earlier last month, prompting a no contact advisory for the St. Joseph River between Three Rivers and Constantine Monday, July 10 through Tuesday, July 18.
Then on Wednesday, July 26, 20,000 more gallons of wastewater had spilled into the river, which city officials say happened because of heavy rains that overwhelmed pumps being used while the original break was being fixed.
This prompted another no contact advisory issued by the Branch-Hillsdale-St. Joseph Community Health Agency. That advisory was lifted back on Friday, July 28.
The funding breakdown for the four companies to complete the repairs:
- 150,000 for construction by RkDavis
- $100,000 for bypass pumping by Mersino
- $15,647 for excavating by Perceptive Service & Operations
- $10,150 for vactor truck services by Clean Earth
