KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – The local Libertarian party has lost round one of their two count claim that the Kalamazoo County Election Commission took improper actions when it set a meeting to determine if one candidate could run for two offices. State statute bans running for two incompatible offices that might cause a conflict of interest.
Judge Curtis Bell ruled Thursday morning that Takisha Johnson does have the right to run for the Kalamazoo Public Schools board and the Kalamazoo Public Library board at the same time.
Johnson argued during the hearing that sitting on the two offices would not cause any conflicts, as the Libertarians claimed in their suit.
Rafael Wolf, who filed the challenges, says their other beef is with the Kalamazoo County Elections Commission, which they claim failed to properly notice the meeting where the Johnson issue was discussed.
That is the subject of another court hearing Friday morning.
The clerk’s office declined to comment on the allegation, saying it doesn’t comment on pending litigation.
