PAW PAW, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – The Michigan Department of Transportation’s Local Bridge Advisory Board recently approved the Van Buren County Road Commission’s application for local bridge funds to replace the bridge that carries 40th Street over the Paw Paw River in Waverly Township.
The replacement, which is estimated to cost approximately $3.9 Million, will be funded through 90% Local Bridge Funds, 5% Waverly Township, and 5% VBCRC. Bridge funding does not include engineering costs, which are also split 50/50 between the Township and the road commission. This grant is the largest award for a single project by the Van Buren County Road Commission.
“This award is significant as the VBCRC first began submitting this structure in its annual requests for Local Bridge Funding in 2008″, said Bret Witkowski, Managing Director for the Van Buren County Road Commission. “Federal and State funds are in high demand, and many agencies are turned down every year due to shortfalls. This year we were fortunate to be selected as one of only three “Large Bridge” replacements in the State.”
Engineering plans will begin to be developed over the next year to prepare the project for the sealed bidding process. The replacement is scheduled for 2027.
