KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – That odor you may have smelled in downtown Kalamazoo Monday afternoon was not the city’s fault.
They say in a press release that the hydrocarbons were the result of a malfunction at a private manufacturing company on the southeast side and could be smelled as far west as Howard Street. It’s been reported to state environmental officials.
City utilities director Jim Baker told commissioners last night that they just completed a replacement of carbon filters and replaced a pipeline between the wastewater plant and Graphics Packaging that was specifically designed to prevent odor leaks.
They did not identify the company responsible for the big stink.
