LANSING, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel is re-issuing her tax season consumer alerts.
Nessel is encouraging people to file their taxes early to help prevent tax-related identity theft.
She says don’t give your Social Security number unless there is a good reason, you’re confident you’re giving it to someone authorized to request it, and you know they will protect it.
Nessel is also urging people to use a secure internet connection if they are filing their tax return electronically.
She says if someone suspects they have been an identity theft victim, they should immediately contact the IRS Identity Protection Specialized Unit at 800-908-4490.
