LANSING, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – The top education official in Michigan, who previously served as superintendent for Kalamazoo Public Schools, is stepping down later this year.
Dr. Michael Rice. Michigan’s Superintendent of Public Instruction Dr. Michael F. Rice announced his retirement from the position Friday. His last day will be October 3, 2025.
Prior to his role with the state, Dr. Rice served as superintendent of Kalamazoo Public Schools for 12 years as well as a superintendent in Clifton, NJ.
In a statement Dr. Rice said, “It’s been an honor to serve Michigan’s 1.4 million public school children over the last six school years. It’s been a privilege to work with the State Board of Education and the state’s talented teachers, students, parents, administrators, support staff, Governor Whitmer, state legislators, education organizations, broader community, and the dedicated staff of the Michigan Department of Education, small in number but mighty in battle, to improve education for our children.”
Dr. Rice says he plans to write and do some consulting once he steps down from his state position.
