PORTAGE, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Portage Public Schools will host a groundbreaking ceremony for the new Woodland Elementary School Monday afternoon.
The new building at 1401 Woodland Drive is part of the $175 million “Building the Future of Learning” bond, approved by voters in 2021 to modernize and rebuild aging elementary schools in the district.
Originally opened in 1968, Woodland Elementary has served the Portage community for nearly 60 years. School officials says the new building, expected to open in fall 2027, will feature flexible, modern learning spaces and an “enchanted forest” theme, with natural materials and abundant light to promote calm and creativity.
“This groundbreaking is a symbol of our community’s investment in its children and their future,” said Johnny Edwards, Assistant Superintendent of Operations. “The new Woodland will be a place where students thrive.”
Construction begins this summer. During the process, students will temporarily attend the former Haverhill Elementary to ensure uninterrupted learning.
The event Monday begins at 2:15 p.m. and will include remarks from district leaders, ceremonial shovel-turning, and a community celebration.
