KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Kalamazoo city commissioners are scheduled to approve contracts with the developers of the new downtown arena to reconfigure all the utilities, waterways, and other infrastructure around the new sports and entertainment complex.
Utilities director James Baker calls it a “dig once” strategy that is less expensive and more convenient for the public.
But it won’t be hassle free. A two block stretch of that vital roadway will be closed for the rest of the construction season.
Baker says their goal is to reopen one lane of Westnedge in November, and work through the winter and next spring to finish the rest.
He says drivers who regularly use that route will be warned before it happens.
The city and CD Arena LLC will split the $13 million cost of the project roughly down the middle. It will combine installing new sewer, water and stormwater lines with all the private and public utilities the arena will need before rebuilding Westnedge between Michigan and Kalamazoo avenues. It also includes reconfiguring Arcadia Creek.
