KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – With the school year set to start without a contract for Kalamazoo Public Schools teachers, another union that has yet to settle with KPS is its support personnel, and there may be problems with that negotiation as well.
At last night’s school board meeting, Michigan Education Association Uniserve Director Melvina Gillespie alleged the district shut down the email address of a former Kalamazoo Support Personnel official while she was on medical leave and gave her supervisor access to it when it was temporarily reinstated.
Board president Ti’Anna Harrison cut her off, telling her such matters had to be presented in writing.
It’s all about protecting employee privacy.
Gillespie had just begun talking about a second issue, accusing another employee by name of withholding information, when her three-minute time limit ran out.
Superintendent Darrin Slade intervened to reinforce President Harrison’s admonition.
Gillespie did not give up the podium until they cut off her microphone, after she was confronted by school security.
Gillespie says she may file a complaint with the Michigan Employment Relations Commission, claiming the district’s actions violate policy and are illegal.
The KSP represents bus drivers, office staff, paraprofessionals, and school security staff.
