KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Traffic data from the first seven months of 2025 shows crashes in Kalamazoo are declining, and city officials are crediting their Streets for All program for making the difference.
The program is designed to slow traffic and provide better and safer facilities for motorists, pedestrians, and bicyclists. That has included switching four-lane streets to three lanes, lane elimination and narrowing, roundabouts, traffic circles, bike lanes and cycle tracks. City officials say there are also enhanced pedestrian crossings, such as the mural and pedestrian scramble traffic signal at the intersection of Portage Street and Washington Square in the Edison Neighborhood, that they says makes intersection crossing easier and safer to cross in any direction.
Total crashes dropped from 1,752 in 2015 to 1,466 in 2024. There have been 1,328 so far in 2025.

Dennis Randolph, public works manager and traffic engineer for the City of Kalamazoo says, “We are making headway in keeping our streets safe for everyone by reducing speeds and calming traffic. Many Kalamazoo motorists are watching their speeds and paying more attention to the difficult and dangerous job of driving on our public streets. There’s more work to do to drive our crash numbers down further and keep everyone safe.”
