KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – The Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety says a 16-year-old male is in custody and multiple stolen firearms were recovered during an investigation at an apartment in the 1300 block of Fox Ridge.
They say Monday a detective from the Criminal Investigations Division received information that the juvenile, who has prior weapon-related charges, was inside the residence. As detectives began their response, they were advised that several small children were possibly inside the apartment and that additional juveniles were believed to be in possession of firearms.
With the support of the KDPS Community Policing Unit, officers made contact with the occupants of the apartment. KDPS says a slow, methodical process was used to ensure the safe removal of the children. The wanted juvenile was located and taken into custody without incident.
Detectives continued their investigation and searched the apartment, locating multiple stolen firearms. The investigation into these firearms is ongoing.
“Throughout this investigation, our top priority was the immediate safety of the children in the apartment and the surrounding neighborhood,” said Sgt. Daniel Chenier of the Criminal Investigations Division. “Removing guns from the hands of children is critical to protecting our community.”
