KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Not everyone is happy about the idea of rebuilding the new Kalamazoo County Administration Building across the street from its current location downtown, or the price it will cost to do it.
Former county commissioner Roger Tuinier says he thinks at $9 million, they are overpaying for the property. By his estimates based on the SEV, the county is offering six times what it’s worth.
He also questions the need to put it downtown.
Board chair Jen Strebs says there is a statutory requirement that it be located in the county seat, but that’s not the only reason they picked this location.
Strebs also defended the purchase price of the lot, which is the current location of a McDonald’s that has now lost its franchise.
The project is just in its infant stages at this point, with a lot more discussion and investigation ahead before any ground is broken.
