PORTAGE, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – The city of Portage has broken ground on their new Farmer’s Market and has decided who will get naming rights to the new pavilions.
Contrary to what you may have read online, Mayor Patricia Randall says very few city tax dollars will be used to finance the new facility.
It will be called the “Portage Zhang Farmer’s Market” to acknowledge their million-dollar gift.
She says the new facility will be sharing parking, bathroom and other facilities that already exist at Portage City Hall and the Zhang Senior Center, a decision they made to further reduce the cost of the project.
Councilmember Jihan Young says it’s taken them three years to get to this point.
The Portage city council voted earlier this month to buy the materials needed to construct the pavilions and chose the contractor this week.
They hope to have it open sometime next year.
