KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Kalamazoo said thanks to its longest and shortest serving commissioners last night and to the city’s long serving city manager, all leaving city service.
After 11 terms, Don Cooney was honored with a proclamation and a standing ovation. The new multipurpose building at the Farmers Market has been named in his honor.
Commissioner Qianna Decker served for just one term and thanked her colleagues for their leadership.
City Manager Jim Ritsema retires today after 13 years on the job, he was given a proclamation and the key to the city.
He says good leadership is stewardship.
Mayor Dave Anderson says Ritsema has certainly succeeded in his goal, citing the Foundation for Excellence as an example.
The commission approved an agreement with City Hall veteran Patsy Moore to serve as interim city manager until Malcolm Hankins assumes the post on January 5th.
