SHERWOOD TOWNSHIP, MI (WNWN/WTVB) – A stolen vehicle suspect out of Kalamazoo County was arrested in Branch County’s Sherwood Township Wednesday afternoon following a foot chase.
The Branch County Sheriff’s Department says they were called to Arney and Oliverda Roads at about 10:15 a.m. after a compact passenger car failed to stop at a stop sign and plowed through a yard.
No one was around and there were no witnesses. It was later discovered the vehicle was stolen from Kalamazoo County and was involved with hitting a Portage Police car Wednesday morning at 8:50 a.m.. The driver managed to flee from Portage Police.
It was determined the suspect was a 29-year-old man from Kalamazoo.
Branch County Deputies summoned Sheriff K-9 Chaos for tracking the suspect of the stolen vehicle. At about 1:00 p.m., a Sheriff Detective saw the suspect and a foot pursuit began.
The chase led to the St. Joseph River where after a short chase that went down steep embankments along the river, Sheriff Deputies and K-9 Chaos apprehended the stolen vehicle suspect.
It was later learned the suspect had felony warrants out of Kalamazoo County. The suspect was lodged at the Branch County Jail.
Authorities plan to request numerous charges from prosecutors in both Branch and Kalamazoo Counties. Sheriff Deputies were assisted by the Michigan State Police.
