ALLEGAN, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — Allegan County Sheriff’s Deputies investigating a fatal crash that took place on Monday, April 4, around 1:39 p.m. in Trowbridge Township.
Authorities say it happened at the intersection of M-40 and 110th Avenue.
Several witnesses said that an SUV traveling westbound on 110th Avenue went through a stop sign while crossing M-40.
The driver of the SUV, a 20-year-old Grand Rapids man was then struck by a semi traveling northbound on M-40. The driver, who was the only one in the SUV at the time, was pronounced dead at the scene by first responders.
The driver of the semi was transported to an area hospital for minor injuries before being released.
Preliminary investigation showed that distracted driving was a contributing factor in the crash.
A portion of M-40 was closed off by law enforcement for several hours while deputies investigated the crash and crews cleaned up the scene.
The crash itself remains under investigation by the Allegan County Sheriff’s Office and reconstruction team.
Assisting on scene was the Michigan State Police, Michigan DNR, Allegan City Police, Allegan Fire District, and Gobles Pine Grove Fire Department.
