PAW PAW, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — Michigan State Police are investigating a crash from last Friday, August 12, in Van Buren County between a motorcycle and a van that left one person dead and two others injured.
Authorities say it happened around 9:45 p.m. on 90th Avenue near 67th Street in Keeler Township.
Preliminary investigation revealed a Ford panel van driven by 44-year-old Renato Florez of Covert, was traveling westbound on 90th Avenue when he crossed the centerline and crashed head-on with an eastbound motorcycle driven by 27-year-old Darek Jamal Bullock-Mills of Niles.
Bulluck-Mills was ejected from the motorcycle and pronounced dead at the scene.
A 24-year-old female passenger on the motorcycle who was also ejected, sustained critical injuries and was taken via med flight to Bronson Hospital in Kalamazoo.
Officers say Florez, the driver of the van, showed signs of intoxication during field sobriety tests and had open intoxicants in his vehicle.
Florez, who sustained minor injuries was arrested and lodged at the Van Buren County jail on charges of operating while intoxicated causing death and operating while causing serious bodily injury.
The case currently remaining open pending lab analysis and additional follow-up.
