KALAMAZOO, MI ( WKZO AM/FM) – Over 600 Consumers Energy crews, contractors and lineworkers from outside Michigan started their final push Sunday to restore power to homes and businesses affected by the powerful ice storm that hit the state last Wednesday and Thursday.
Consumers Energy says most customers should have power back today, while restoration work will be complete Monday.
As of Sunday afternoon 9,845 customers in Kalamazoo County still had no power, with 2,567 out in Calhoun County and 25,229 without power in Jackson County, one of the hardest hit areas in the state.
“Our crews have made strong progress this weekend and are committed to working around the clock to get the job done,” said Norm Kapala, one of Consumers Energy’s officers in charge for the event. “We’re grateful to people in the communities we serve for their patience and understanding these last few days, and we look forward to getting the lights back on for every single customer.”
Consumers Energy is thanking customers with in-person events, including free admission to the Air Zoo Aerospace & Science Center in Portage, starting at noon Sunday. Tickets will be provided to the first 400 general guests.
About 2,000 lineworkers from Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, Kentucky and Virginia are continuing to restore power across southern Michigan communities that were blanketed with up to a half-inch of ice.
As of Sunday afternoon, DTE Energy reports over 217,000 customers still without power.
