KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – The Kalamazoo Public School Schools Board of Education has filled their vacant trustee position.
The board did interviews with six finalists Wednesday night, with those finalists presenting a wide variety of personal, professional, and Kalamazoo Public Schools related experiences. The board was prepared to go through several rounds to narrow the list to a winner, but they say it was not necessary, as there was a clear standout after the interviews were done.
Without discussion or hesitation they picked Maricela Alcala. She is the CEO at Gryphon Place. Both her children have graduated from the district.
Alcala says she would like to see the district improve student outcomes.
Because her organization provides restorative practice and suicide prevention services to the district, school district attorney Marshall Grate says she will have to abstain from any board action related to that contract.
Alcala will be sworn in and go straight to work at the board’s next meeting July 6.
Alcala will serve for the next year and a half, filling out the remaining term of former trustee Tandy Moore.
