BATTLE CREEK, MI (WNWN/WTVB) – This will not be a good weekend for Type A drivers in the area of I-94 and Capital Avenue in Battle Creek.
The Michigan Department of Transportation has announced that contractors are planning to start setting beams for the new Capital Avenue bridge over I-94 on Friday which will try the patience of even the most mild mannered motorists.
While setting the beams over westbound I-94 will not require any additional lane closures, the beams over eastbound lanes will require police-assisted intermittent closures of 10 to 15 minutes as well as single-lane closures until 10 a.m. Saturday morning.
If additional time is needed to set beams, the same plan will be implemented Saturday night into Sunday morning. Access will be maintained to all businesses during the project.
While the beams are being set, M.D.O.T. says westbound I-94 will be reduced to one lane and routed on the Capital Avenue ramps starting at 8:00 p.m. Friday night.
Westbound travelers will not be able to access northbound Capital Avenue at the ramps and will instead need to use the Helmer Road Exit (exit 95).
Eastbound I-94 also will be reduced to one lane starting at 8:00 p.m., and there will be intermittent 10 to 15 minute total closures.
Northbound Capital Avenue and Beckley Road will remain open. There will be intermittent five to ten minute closures with flaggers on Capital Avenue and Beckley Road to get the beams into the work zone.
Southbound Capital Avenue will not be able to access ramp to westbound I-94 and will have to follow the posted detour to access westbound I-94 at Helmer Road.
Drivers should pay attention to the detours and be prepared for delays. It maybe best to avoid the area altogether this weekend and take an alternate route if possible.
