OSHTEMO TOWNSHIP, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Police say a man was shot dead by a Kalamazoo County Sheriff’s deputy after stabbing his parents inside their home near Kalamazoo, and then attacking the deputy.
The incident started just after 7:00 a.m. Friday at a home at Chippendale Drive and Morningstar Way in Oshtemo Township.
The Kalamazoo County Sheriff’s Office says a call came in to dispatchers about a suicidal person armed with a knife. Michigan State Police say that 911 call came from the parents who were stabbed with a kitchen knife.
Michigan State Police Detective 1st Lt. Chuck Christensen said 38-year-old Daniel Russell still had the knife when first responders arrived. A deputy used a taser on the suspect, but it had no effect. According to Christensen, the deputy then pulled out his gun in self-defense, shooting and killing Russell.
Russell’s parents were taken to a hospital where one is listed in serious condition, according to Christensen.
