LANSING, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Figures released last week by the Michigan Department of Technology, Management and Budget show Kalamazoo County’s unemployment rate dropped to 4% in September.
That number is down from 4.5 % in August 2024, but up from the 3.7% rate in September 2023.

The report from the state said not seasonally adjusted jobless rates decreased in 16 of Michigan’s 17 labor market areas over the month. Labor force levels rose in 14 Michigan regions over the month.
According to the monthly survey of employers, Michigan not seasonally adjusted payroll employment rose by 17,000 between August and September.
Wayne Rourke from the Michigan Center for Data and Analytics said, “Michigan labor market areas demonstrated expected unemployment rate reductions during September. Regional payroll jobs gains largely reflected seasonal hiring in education-related industries due to the start of the academic year.”
