KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Today is the Martin Luther King Jr. Day national holiday. That means federal, state, and local governmental offices will be closed, and there will be no mail. The stock market and many banks will also be closed, but ATM’s will still be operational.
There are a lot of events taking place in Kalamazoo to remember the great civil rights leader.
Mt. Zion’s annual celebration was held yesterday afternoon at their church on Kalamazoo’s north side.
Today, Gryphon Place will once again be hosting the MLK National Day of Service, with a list of local agencies willing to put volunteers to work posted on their website.

The city had planned a march and a wreath laying at Martin Luther King Park on Rose Street this afternoon, but with temperatures predicted to be in the single digits, it’s been scrubbed.
Western Michigan University will be hosting four King related teach-ins from noon to 3:30 at the Student Center Ballroom. They will also be livestreamed.
God’s Kitchen will host a community meal to mark the holiday at Kanley Chapel on the WMU campus from 5 to 6 p.m.
A free event featuring author and commentator Baraki Sellers will be held at Miller Auditorium at 6 p.m. The title of his address will be “The Power of Nonviolence: Lasting Change through Peace.”
