PORTAGE, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – The Portage Environmental Council is challenging the community to help safely dispose of plastic bags, with a drive to collect them.
Beginning this Saturday, March 1st, they are asking residents to drop plastic bags into a bin in the Portage City Hall lobby.
Lauren Thompkins says they have a year to collect 1,000 pounds of plastic bags for recycling. If they reach that goal, the city will receive a park bench made from recycled plastic.
She says one-trillion of the bags are used every year around the world.
They are working with the Youth Advisory Council which will be setting up receptacles in Portage schools.
Many communities in the U.S. and some countries around the world have banned the use of plastic grocery bags, because they have become an environmental threat.
Michigan currently has a state law that prevents local communities from imposing bans on such bags. An attempt by state House Democrats to reverse that failed.
