KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Kalamazoo’s new youth sports facility will need its own independent board to build and run the west side facility, under the state law that will fund its construction.
The Kalamazoo County board is set to vote on whether to open negotiations with the city of Kalamazoo on how that Assessment District Authority should be structured.
Vice chair John Taylor wondered why they need partners, since the county is handling the finances.
Corporate Council Lewis Smith said that’s a decision the board had already included in their ordinance. It also says the county board will have final approval of all appointments.
The sports facility will be right on the city of Kalamazoo-Oshtemo Township border, and it’s been suggested that they also get a seat on the board.
County commissioner Abigail Wheeler, who has been in on the talks, says that’s what the negotiations are for.
Discover Kalamazoo Director Jane Ghosh has suggested that ideally, the board’s membership be revised over time, to include some members with construction expertise at first, to be replaced when operations becomes the focus.
