CALHOUN COUNTY, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – A dead bird in Calhoun County has been found to have had West Nile virus.
It is the first confirmed animal case of West Nile virus in Calhoun County in 2025. Officials have not said where the bird was found.
The county is urging residents to take precaution to protect themselves against mosquito bites, as that is how people can get infected.
Some people may develop more severe symptoms, including encephalitis or meningitis. Those at greatest risk for severe illness include people 50 years and older and those with certain medical conditions, such as diabetes, cancer, kidney disease, hypertension, or those who have received an organ transplant.
The best way to protect themselves from West Nile virus are to apply insect repellents that contain DEET, wear light-colored, long-sleeved shirts and long pants when outside, maintain window and door screening to keep mosquitoes outside, and empty water from mosquito breeding sites around the home including buckets, old tires, and unused kiddie pools.
