KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Kids go back to school today in Kalamazoo County and there will be some big changes in Kalamazoo Public Schools this year.
Superintendent Darrin Slade says it will be just a half-day today, but he still wants students to show up ready to learn.
One of the first lessons at middle schools and high schools will come as they are stepping through the front door, and that’s how to navigate weapon detectors. The devices, which have been used previously at sporting events, have now been installed at front entrances.
Dr. Slade says the only people who will not have to go through the detectors are the staff at that school.
Students, other school employees, parents, and visitors will all be screened.
The other big change is not so obvious. The district is switching back to two regular semesters from the trimester schedule they have had for the past few years. It will mean some changes in the calendar and class length.
The necessary changes in course content were approved last spring.
