KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Kalamazoo County is once again having to reallocate unallocated federal COVID-19 dollars, with the clock ticking on that money.
Any American Rescue Plan Act dollars not spent by December 31st goes back to Washington.
Their accounting has shown that some of the programs they initially funded with $51-million they received from ARPA have come in under cost, and now there is another pot of leftover money.
Administrator Kevin Catlin says it’s about $458,000 this time that he is recommending be spent to buy furniture for The Landing Place, their new transitional shelter for homeless families.
The rest will replace glitchy technology in their board chamber, which has disrupted some recent meetings.
Several board members proposed a deadline on the agencies to make sure it’s all spent.
Commissioner John Gisler says he is concerned.
Commissioner Monteze Morales says she also has concerns.
Catlin assured them it’s in their interest to have it all spent on time on tangible goods and projects.
Commissioners are expected to approve the new spending as part of their consent agenda at their meeting this week.
