KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – The Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety is now accepting applications for public safety officers through 11:59 p.m. on April 22, 2026.
Applicants will have to take MCOLES testing, both a written test and a fitness test; undergo an extensive background investigation; medical, psychological, and drug testing; and be interviewed.
Candidates will start their training in May 2026 if they are successful.
People will need to be a U.S. citizen with a high school diploma or GED, have a valid driver’s license, and be 21 years old by December 10th of this year.
Prior experience as a police officer, firefighter, or medical first responder is not required as that training will be provided.
However, KDPS does offer a lateral transfer incentive for current MCOLES certified or certifiable police officers, full-time firefighters, and full-time medical first responders. Qualified lateral transfers will receive a $15,000 hiring bonus and be able to transfer up to three years of police or fire experience to the current wage scale.
