KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Teams of federal, state, and local personnel are compiling information in the city of Kalamazoo and 30 other counties in the Michigan, as the state looks to ask for assistance from the Federal Emergency Management Agency for aid in the wake of severe flooding and multiple tornadoes this spring.
Lauren Thompson, public information officer for the Michigan State Police, Emergency Management and Homeland Security Division, says the damage and impact data that’s gathered will be used to determine whether specific disasters meet criteria to warrant a governor’s request for a federal disaster declaration and FEMA individual assistance.
The data collection efforts are expected to last through next week.
In addition to the city of Kalamazoo, counties being assessed include Alcona, Allegan, Alpena, Antrim, Barry, Benzie, Charlevoix, Cheboygan, Crawford, Emmet, Grand Traverse, Gratiot, Iosco, Kalkaska, Lake, Leelanau, Manistee, Mecosta, Missaukee, Montcalm, Montmorency, Muskegon, Newaygo, Oceana, Osceola, Oscoda, Presque Isle, Roscommon, Saginaw and Wexford.
No FEMA dollars are available until there is a federal disaster declaration.
