KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – A proposal is in the works to create a homeless shelter for those with health issues in Kalamazoo.
One of the more successful aspects of Kalamazoo’s emergency winter relief efforts was a program designed to provide temporary shelter and medical care for those who needed it.
Two homes near the Western Michigan University campus have continued to operate as a respite facility since the end of the winter shelter program last month, operated by WMU, the Homer Stryker School of Medicine, ISK and Dignity in Motion.
They are requesting a $467,000 bridge grant to maintain the operation for up to 18 months to give ISK and WMed’s street medical team time to apply for Medicaid reimbursements and funds from the Michigan Health Endowment Fund to cover their costs.
Kalamazoo County Housing Director Mary Balkema is proposing they use money from the housing millage.
It is on the county board’s Tuesday night agenda.
