KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – The Kalamazoo County Jail isn’t the only governmental structure in need of repairs.
Kalamazoo City Hall will be having some plumbing work done this week, and City Manager Malcolm Hankins says that will limit access to the building, which was constructed in 1931.
“We will begin a project on waterline replacement inside of the building. We will be open for business but just limited facilities,” Hankins says.
He says you may want to call ahead and find out, or just do your business over the phone.
“We’ll have limited access to water utilities so if you can do service and business with the city remotely, please try to do so.”
One county commissioner says the front entrance of their Administration Building on Kalamazoo Avenue has looked like an abandoned liquor store, since a car crashed through it and into the elevators six months ago, and it may be Christmas before the building is back to normal.
Interim County Administrator Terrell Cole says the new front entrance needed to be ordered custom, and that’s a $90,000 project.
“Shop drawings have been approved. A purchase order was issued July 31st and installation is anticipated in November,” says Cole. “These need to be manufactured after they were designed, and it’s a long, long lead time unfortunately.”
Cole says they managed to get one elevator working again, by borrowing parts from other elevators in the building.
“Completion remains targeted for early December. Current costs are approximately $75,000 for the west elevator and associated wall repairs and $288,293 for the east elevator rebuild.”
Right now the only public entrance to the structure is off an alley between the county building and the Hilton Garden Inn in the old Masonic Building off Rose Street.
Repairs on the water pipes at the Kalamazoo County Jail on Lamont Street are expected to be completed sometime this fall.
