KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – This may be just another Monday for you, but for thousands of Kalamazoo families, this is back to school day.
At least one local elected official is suggesting you head out early on your morning commute if you want to get to work safely and on time, because there will be a lot of extra traffic.
“Exercise caution,” says Portage city councilmember Jihan Young. “Please follow buses, follow with care, when they put the stop sign up please stop, there are many children who may be riding the bus for the first time.”
She says it won’t be just traffic on four wheels, a lot of students make their own way to school.
“Riding their bikes, walking on the road, some of our roads in the neighborhoods don’t have sidewalks so they may have to be walking on the street, please just exercise patience.”
Some charter and parochial schools have already begun their fall terms, but all nine public school districts in Kalamazoo County observe the same general calendar because they all share programs like the Math and Science Center, Special Education Programs, the new Career Connect Center and others.
Today will be a half day, so expect fast food outlets to be busy at lunch time too.
