KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Every three hours in the United States a person or vehicle is struck by a train. In June 2026, two people were killed in Kalamazoo after being hit by a train, raising new concerns about railroad safety.
Michigan Operation Lifesaver Inc., the Michigan Railroads Association, and the Michigan Department of Transportation will begin See Tracks? Think Train Week (formerly Rail Safety Week) to promote safety around railroad tracks with a kick-off event next Monday, September 21 in Kalamazoo.
Among the speakers will be Curtis Stewart, Operation Lifesaver state coordinator and Jon Cool, Michigan Railroads Association, as well as federal, state and local officials, law enforcement officers, and railroad representatives.
The event will take place at the Kalamazoo Amtrak Station, 459 North Burdick Street, beginning at 10:00 a.m.
A 52-year-old male pedestrian was struck and killed by a train June 10 near Church Street, Rose Street, and West Kalamazoo Avenue, while a bicyclist was hit and killed by an Amtrak passenger train June 22 around 9:30 p.m. near Oliver Street and Stadium Drive, close to Western Michigan University.
