PORTAGE, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – There are some new faces and new positions on the Portage city council, but it had nothing to do with Tuesday’s national election.
Last night, new City Manager Karen Dempsey-Horan took her seat on the dais for the first time.
“My family and I are ecstatic to be here. I am very proud to serve this community in this role and just it’s a wonderful community I’m thankful to be a part of it.”
The council also elected councilmember Chris Burns to become the new mayor pro-tempore, to replace Dr. Jim Pearson who retired last month.
Burns says this board puts policy before politics every time.
“And I think you have the shared beliefs that I have, that local government is a team sport and we’re going to succeed or struggle together. That’s what I pledge to you as mayor pro tem and I know I’ve got big shoes to fill.”
The council also interviewed candidates to fill the position left vacant on the council by Pearson’s retirement.
They will pick the winner at their next meeting.
