KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Kalamazoo Public Schools superintendent Darrin Slade has come up with a laundry list of new issues he wants to explore with the community as they transition from this school year to the next.
Dr. Slade says these issues have come up during his strategic planning sessions with the public, and meetings with staff.
He says he wants to discuss installing metal detectors, switching from trimesters back to semesters, the use and misuse of artificial intelligence and reducing the number of credits students need to graduate.
He says KPS requires 26 credits, more than some other districts.
He laid out the list of things to discuss at a special committee of the whole meeting with board members last night.
Slade says using artificial intelligence in the classroom might help teachers. He says some students are already using it inappropriately, and they need to set some rules.
He says most schools in the area don’t use metal detectors, but it’s a safety issue that needs exploring.
That issue and all the others would be thoroughly discussed with the community before implementation would be considered.
Also on his list of topics to explore are instructional practices, continued use of the Reading Recovery program, and a range of student behavior issues.
He says separate community meetings will be scheduled to get public input on those issues, before any action is taken.
