KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Some new housing plans are up for approval this week to provide more low and moderate-income residential space in Kalamazoo County.
Developer Jamauri Bogan wants to add 38 additional units to his Zone 32 project at Frank and Pitcher on the north side of the city of Kalamazoo, which already includes a YMCA early learning center and 12 workforce housing units.
He says he has had to modify the Phase 2 expansion, reducing the number of low income units because he was unable to secure a Low-Income Housing Tax Credit from the state.
County commissioners will be asked to alter their grant from the housing millage to accept those changes Tuesday.
County commissioners will also be asked to greenlight a tax break for a new housing project in Galesburg that would add 52 new homes near Blake Boulevard and Battle Creek Street.
Macy Walters with the Brownfield Authority says 42% of the units and the duplexes would be restricted to renters earning up to 100% of the Average Median Income.
24 other units would be sold as single family homes.
Rents would be set at around $2,300 to $2,400 per month.
Commissioner Monteze Morales says she really doesn’t consider that to be affordable.
The developers are asking the county board for a brownfield plan that would permit them to convert future property tax payments into infrastructure improvements at the site.
Construction on the $17-million project would begin this summer, if the incentive is approved.
