KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Domestic violence crimes in Kalamazoo are rising sharply.
YWCA Kalamazoo CEO Susan Rosas says strangulation is the greatest predictor of homicide in domestic violence, and says if a partner strangles another, the risk of someone dying from that is 10-times higher than anyone else.
Kalamazoo County Prosecutor Jeff Getting says the problem is growing.
Rosas and other officials say the state budget under consideration includes cuts to victim services, as does the federal budget. They are urging people to reach out to lawmakers to prevent cuts from being made.
In all of 2025, there were two domestic violence homicides in Kalamazoo, which was similar to 2024. However in 2026, there have been three domestic violence homicides in Kalamazoo in just the first quarter of this year.
