KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – It looks like the city of Kalamazoo will slap a moratorium on high tech data centers, just like Portage and several local townships have done, but it may take a month or two.
Commissioners not only asked City Attorney Aaron Leal to draft language to put a hold on issuing permits for data centers, but also cryptocurrency mining operations and battery energy storage systems.
Commissioner Chris Praedel made that suggestion.
Leal says the city has to explain why they are concerned, what they plan to do during the moratorium, and state how long it will last.
But Leal says a moratorium could last as long as a few months if they complete new zoning requirements quickly or extended past a year, if they can show they need the time.
The commission meets again in a week, and Leal was asked to have a proposal drafted by then.
Leal is recommending they send the question of imposing a moratorium to the planning commission first, which is their normal procedure when considering zoning changes.
