KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – A moratorium is in effect in Kalamazoo preventing any applications for data centers from being accepted at City Hall, but it won’t really be official for another couple of weeks.
This week commissioners set a public hearing for their next meeting to take up changes to the city’s zoning codes, embedding the moratorium.
Assistant City Planner Bobby Durkee says their previous action was just a resolution.
“This ensures that it’s enforceable under our zoning and development code, and the state’s enabling act.”
Durkee says a year should be adequate to come up with the guardrails required to protect the public, should such high tech operations propose building in Kalamazoo.
The city of Kalamazoo has used moratoriums twice before – once when considering how to regulate digital billboards, and the second time to rewrite zoning codes for marijuana businesses.
